The eight systems every genset and pump check must cover
A proper generator maintenance checklist is not "oil, fuel, done." These are the eight checkpoints that separate a unit that starts from a unit that is safe, legal and ready to carry load.
Engine and fuel system
Oil level and condition, coolant level, belt tension, air filter restriction, and the fuel system end to end: tank water drain, primary filter, line chafe, and day-tank venting. Diesel that has sat for 90 days grows algae that plugs filters under load - the classic mid-pour failure.
Electrical output verification
A green "running" light tells you the engine turns. It says nothing about voltage, frequency or phase balance under load. Log no-load and loaded voltage, hertz, and amperage per leg. A unit showing 208V unloaded that sags to 192V at 60 percent load is a defect, not a pass.
Grounding and bonding
This is where OSHA electrical citations originate. Verify the ground rod, clamp condition, conductor size, and whether the neutral is bonded or floating for the way the unit is wired today. Photograph the rod and connection - that photo is your answer when an inspector asks.
Exhaust routing and CO exposure
Check the muffler, flex section and rain cap, then walk the routing: is the exhaust pointed away from the work area, the air intake of the site trailer, and any trench or basement? Portable generators in partially enclosed spaces are a repeat carbon monoxide killer on construction sites.
Coolant condition
Level is the start, not the finish. Test freeze point and inhibitor strength, look for oil sheen in the overflow bottle, and check hose swelling at the clamps. A genset that overheats at hour six of a ten-hour pour shuts itself down at the worst moment.
Automatic transfer switch
An ATS that has never been exercised will pick the day of an outage to stick. Run the transfer test: kill utility power, time the transfer, confirm the genset picks up load, then retransfer and cool-down. Log both transfer times in seconds.
Emergency stop and guards
Press the e-stop. Every inspection, every unit. Confirm it kills the engine, resets correctly, and is not blocked by a pallet of block. Check belt guards and fan guards are present - they go missing the week a rental unit comes back from a rough site.
Pump-specific checks
For dewatering and trash pumps: mechanical seal weep, impeller wear against the wear plate, suction hose condition and foot-valve seating, priming time, and discharge pressure. A pump that takes four minutes to prime instead of ninety seconds is telling you the wear plate gap is gone.
Generator electrical output test: what "good" actually looks like
Most failed inspections fail on numbers nobody wrote down. Use these working benchmarks when you verify output - and record the actual readings, not a tick box.
