The 72-hour wash rule — where fleets lose loads to a clock they didn't watch

Grade A PMO requires a bulk milk tanker to be cleaned and sanitized at a permitted facility a minimum of every 72 hours. That's not "every three trips" or "when it looks dirty." It's a hard 72-hour window measured from CIP completion to the next milk contact. A tanker that runs a Monday afternoon wash and picks up milk after 4pm Thursday is outside the window — the receiver won't take the load.

How often does a milk tanker need to be washed under Grade A PMO?

A tanker that completed CIP at 4pm Monday must be back in the wash bay by 4pm Thursday if it hasn't been washed in between — regardless of how many pickups it made in that window.
